Buraco - Rules:

Wikipedia link (English): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buraco

Number of players: 2 or 4
With two people, the game occurs in a 1 vs. 1 mode, with individual points. With four players, two doubles are formed, and the game mode is in a 2 vs. 2. Your partner is the one sitting in front of you and the points are counted from the results acquired for both players.

Number of carts: 108 (2 decks with 2 jokers, each)
Distribution: 11 cards for each player and two “dead” (mortos) with 11 cards each. The distribution is made randomly

The game

The player that starts the game, buys a card from the deck on the table. After analyzing which are the possible combinations, the player discards one card (as it is the first round, the player can discard the same card bought in the beginning). Following the clockwise way, the rounds go on. After each buy, the player can get a card down to the table before discarding one card from his hand. Discarding means that the player finished his round and is passing the turn. With this, there's no way to go back. The first player to “beat” with the first 11 cards must get the other 11 cards from corresponding the “dead” deck. The game goes on. If the player that has already taken the “dead” deck beat again, the game is over. If the player or the adversary double don't get the “dead” deck, 100 points must be subtracted from the final score (corresponding to the not taken “dead” deck), as well as all the points from the remaining cards in their hands.

Score

In the end of the game, the score of the cards down to the table are counted. The valor of the remaining cards in the hand are subtracted, as well as 100 points if the “dead” deck was not taken. If one player buy the “dead” deck by indirect beat and the other player finish the game before reaching his turn again, the “dead” deck score is not counted and it's punished as it was not bought.

Beat = 100 points
Two (being joker) = 10 points
Joker = 50 points
From King to 8 = 10 points each card
7 to 3 = 5 points each card
Aces = 15 points each card
Dirty Canastra = 100 points
Clean Canastra = 200 points
Five hundred Canastra / Real = 500 points
Real Canastra + Ace = 1000 points

Glossary:

  • “Down a game” (baixar um jogo) - three or more cards with the same suit, ordered in a numeric sequence. E.g..: 7, 8 e 9 of hearts. The sequence goes from 2 to the King (K). It's possible to insert an Ace before 2 or after the King. The lowest amount of cards you can get down to the table are three. During the game, it's possible to insert more cards to the sequence.
  • “Dead” (morto) - a group of 11 cards which is “bought” when a player has no cards in the hands anymore (all of them are discarded). With 4 players, each “dead” is valid for one double. The “dead” is taken by the first player of the team that finishes with the cards in the hand. It's not possible to take both of the “dead” decks. If the cards from the deck in the table finish, the remaining “dead” (if there's one) is converted to this deck.
  • “Beat” (batida) - when, even after getting the “dead”, the cards from the player run out. If none of the players get the “dead”, both of them must be converted to the buying deck before.
  • “Direct beat and indirect beat” (batida direta e batida indireta) - Direct beat occurs when one player finishes with his cards without discarding or buying any other. Indirect beat is when the player finishes with the cards discarding or buying at least one.
  • Canastra - at least seven cards of the same valor or in sequence (the same suit). Canastras can be:
    Clean Canastra (without joker)
    Dirty Canastra (with joker)
    Real Canastra + Ace (from one Ace to another, without joker)
    Five hundred Canastra / Real (from Ace to King (K), without joker)
  • Obs.: if the dirty canastras have the card “2” as a joker, and this one has the same suit as the others, this sequence can be turned into “clean” if the substituted card (replaced by 2) is bought and, with this, build a sequence from 2. E.g..: 2,3,4,5,6 of spades.
